Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: mono- comb. form, Latin thalamus ; Greek θάλαμος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + scientific Latin thalamus or its etymon ancient Greek θάλαμος inner chamber (see thalamus n.) + -ous suffix. In sense 2 after French monothalame ( Lamarck Hist. nat. des animaux sans vertèbres (1822) VII. 649). In sense 3 after scientific Latin monothalamus ( E. Tuckerman Genera Lichenum (1872) 127). Compare polythalamous adj.
