Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin monostichum; Greek μονόστιχον.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin monostichum, monostichon (4th cent.) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek μονόστιχον, use as noun of neuter of μονόστιχος (adjective) consisting of one verse < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + στίχος stich n. Compare French monostiche (1653), monostique (1750). Compare earlier distich n., and also hexastich n., octastich n., tetrastich n.
Prosody.
A poem or epigram consisting of a single metrical line; such a line as part of a dialogue of alternating single lines.
