Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monostachyus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin monostachyus, specific epithet (Linnaeus Mantissa Plantarum (ed. 2, 1771) 180; < mono- mono- comb. form + ancient Greek στάχυς ear of corn, spike: see stachys n.) + -ous suffix. Compare poly- comb. form.
Botany. Now rare.
Originally (of a plant or stem): bearing a single flower spike. Later (of a clubmoss): having unbranched aerial stems.
