Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: monospore n., -o- connective, -gony comb. form.
Etymology: < monospore n. + -o- connective + -gony comb. form, after scientific Latin Monosporogonia (Haeckel Natürliche Schöpfungsgeschichte (1868) 150, as Latin term corresponding to German Keimzellenbildung). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mǫ:nosporǫ·gŏni) /ˌmɒnəʊspɒˈrɒɡənɪ/.
Biology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A mode of asexual reproduction in which a single cell of the parent organism detaches and develops into a new individual.

1891 New Sydenham Soc. Lexicon Monosporogony, the form of asexual reproduction in which a single cell detaches itself from the adjoining cells of an organism, increases by division, and forms a multicellular organism.
