Etymology: < the name of Friedrich Mohs (1773–1839), German mineralogist, who devised the scale in 1822.The forms Moh , moh are re-formations arising from misanalysis of the word as a genitive form (compare Moh's in quots. 1903, 1940, 1969, etc.).

Designating a scale of hardness in which ten reference minerals, ranging from very soft to very hard ones, are assigned values of one to ten in order of increasing hardness. Also: a unit of hardness on this scale.The ten minerals of the scale are: 1, talc; 2, gypsum; 3, calcite; 4, fluorspar; 5, apatite; 6, orthoclase; 7, quartz; 8, topaz; 9, corundum; 10, diamond.
