Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from Arabic. Probably partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Arabic muḵayyar; Italian mocaiaro.

Etymology: Ultimately < Arabic muḵayyar select, choice, passive participle of ḵayyara prefer; probably partly via Italian mocaiaro (16th cent.: see mockado n.¹). Arabic muḵayyar may have been used colloquially as a noun meaning ‘wool of prime quality’, short for a phrase in which the participle modified the noun ṣūf wool, although direct attestation is lacking.Forms in -hair , -haire , -hayr , -hayre are probably due to association with hair n. Italian mocaiaro was early applied to textile fabrics of different material (see mockado n.¹; compare also discussion of Middle French moucayart , moucayard s.v.); compare also German †Macheier (16th cent.). In the 17th cent. the English word was borrowed into French as moire (see moire n.¹).
