Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mogilalia.
Etymology: Probably < post-classical Latin mogilalia (although this is first attested 1713 in B. Castelli Lexicon Medicum) < Hellenistic Greek μογιλάλος that speaks with difficulty ( < μογι- mogi- comb. form + ancient Greek -λαλος , combining form of λαλεῖν to speak: see -lalia comb. form) + post-classical Latin -ia -ia suffix1; compare -lalia comb. form. Compare German †Mogilalia (Mansfeld 1839, in Monatsschr. f. Med., Augenheilkunde u. Chirurgie 2 381), Mogilalie.
Medicine. Obsolete. rare.
Difficulty or marked hesitancy in speaking.In quot. 1878: spec. difficulty in pronouncing certain sounds, esp. consonants.

1878 tr. H. W. von Ziemssen et al. Cycl. Pract. Med. XIV. 873 He [sc. Mansfeld] distinguishes two varieties of defective speech, paraphonia and mogilalia.
