Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -phane comb. form, after German Monophan ( A. Breithaupt Vollständige Charakteristik des Mineralsystems (1823) 279). Compare earlier monophanous adj.Breithaupt divided the mineral into two species (see quot. 1993) in the second edition of his Vollständige Charakteristik des Mineralsystems (1832).
