Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a Greek lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -logy comb. form, perhaps after Byzantine Greek μονολογία single utterance (7th cent.) or post-classical Latin monologion monologue, soliloquy (a1109 as the title of a work by Anselm). With sense 2 compare Italian †monologia (1598 in Florio glossed ‘a long tale of a little matter’). Compare earlier monologue n., and also polylogy n.
1. The unchanging, repetitive song of a bird (in quot.: a cuckoo). Cf. monologist n. 1. Obsolete.
