Etymology: < mono- comb. form + line n.2
A. n.
1. Printing. In form Monoline. A kind of type-composing machine which casts a line at a time. Cf. Linotype n. rare. Now historical.The machine was invented in the United States by W. S. Scudder in 1892. Its principles encroached on the patents of the Linotype machine, and so it was not sold on the U.S. market.
