Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Monochlamydeae , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Monochlamydeae, group name ( < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + χλαμυδ- , χλαμύς : see chlamys n.) + -ous suffix. Compare French monochlamydé (1868 in Littré). Compare dichlamydeous adj.
Botany.
Having only one series of perianth segments, i.e. not having the perianth differentiated into corolla and calyx; spec. (now rare) belonging to the Monochlamydeae, a division or subclass of dictyledonous plants having flowers with only one series of perianth segments or sometimes no perianth, including the Chenopodiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, etc.
