Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -cephalous comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -cephalous comb. form, perhaps after French monocéphale (1812 in botanical sense). Compare slightly earlier monocephalus n., and also earlier bicephalous adj., dicephalous adj., polycephalous adj.
