Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monocarpeus , -an suffix.
Etymology: Earliest as monocarpean (see quot. 1856) < post-classical Latin monocarpeus ( A. P. de Candolle Théorie élémentaire de la bot. (1813) 422) < scientific Latin monocarpus (see monocarpous adj.) + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -an suffix; subsequently remodelled after -ian suffix. Compare French monocarpien (de Candolle 1813, as above). Compare earlier monocarpous adj., and slightly earlier monocarpic adj.
Botany. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
