1. A member of any of several Numic-speaking North American Indian peoples living on both sides of the Sierra Nevada crest, central California. Cf. Monache n. 1.The groups west and east of the Sierras are sometimes distinguished as Western Mono (equivalent to Monache in its narrower sense) and Eastern Mono (equivalent to Owens Valley Paiute: see quots. 19781, 1986). The term Mono has also been used to include the linguistically district Mono Lake Northern Paiute.
