Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: monk n.1, rhubarb n.
Etymology: < the genitive of monk n.1 + rhubarb n., after post-classical Latin Rhabarbarum Monachorum (1583 in the source used by Gerard: see quot. 15972 at sense 1). Compare French rhubarbe des moines (1870 in Littré). In β. form < monk n.1 + rhubarb n.
1. Either of two species of dock formerly grown as medicinal plants or pot-herbs, (originally) patience dock, Rumex patientia, and (in later use) R. pseudoalpinus.
