Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French monésia.
Etymology: < French monésia (1839 or earlier), probably < Brazilian Portuguese monésia, further etymology unknown. Compare Cuban Spanish monesia (1840–3 or earlier). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (monī·ʃiă) /məʊˈniːʃ(ɪ)ə/.
Pharmacology.
A vegetable extract obtained from the bark of the Brazilian tree Chrysophyllum glyciphloeum (family Sapotaceae), formerly used to treat diarrhoea, dyspepsia, catarrhal conditions, and ulcers.

1840 Lancet 18 July 612/2 M. Derosne..had obtained them from a new drug recently imported into France from South America, under the name of monæsia.
1843 Pharm. Jrnl. & Trans. 3 292 Dr. G. Martin St. Ange..says: ‘A vegetable substance, called monesia, has lately been imported from South America, in the form of hard thick cakes... M. Bernard Derosne, the druggist, who introduced it, informs me that some travellers call the monesia bark, goharem; and others, buranhem.’
1883 Dispensatory U.S.A. (ed. 15) 1701 Monesia owes its activity probably to this principle and to tannic acid.
1947 Dispensatory U.S.A. (ed. 24) 1524/2 Monesia is stomachic and feebly astringent.
1981 Dorland's Illustr. Med. Dict. (ed. 26) 832/2 Monesia, an extract from monesia bark, the product of Chrysophyllum glyciphloeum, Casar. (Sapotaceae), a tree of Brazil.
