Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Monazit.
Etymology: < German Monazit (A. Breithaupt 1829, in Jrnl. f. Chem. u. Physik 55 301) < Hellenistic Greek μονάζειν to be solitary (see monastery n.), on account of its rarity + German -it -ite suffix1.
Mineralogy.
A commercially important monoclinic phosphate of cerium, lanthanum, other rare earth elements, and thorium, occurring typically as small brownish crystals, often in detrital sands associated with granites and gneisses. Now frequently with a suffix indicating the predominant rare earth element. Also: any of a group of minerals of similar composition.
