Etymology: Origin uncertain. Compare Georgian movi silk material for a shirt, Uzbek movut cloth.The form of the word in English suggests that it might have been borrowed via Russian mov, but this is only recorded later, and may be in a different sense.

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: English mophrodite , morphodite n.
Etymology: Apparently shortened < mophrodite, variant of morphodite n.: see quot. 1885. Compare technical senses of morfrey n., maphrodite adj., and hermaphrodite n.
Now rare. Perhaps Obsolete.
In singular and plural. An instrument similar to a pair of compasses, but with one curved leg resembling that of a pair of calipers. Cf. odd-leg adj.
