Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French mofette; Italian mofeta.
Etymology: < French mofette (1762; 1741 as †mofete , 1753 as †moufette , 1831 as †moffette ) and its etymon Italian mofeta (1683; 1726 as †moffetta ), probably < classical Latin mefītis , mephītis mephitis n. Compare Spanish mofeta (1884 or earlier).
1. An exhalation of carbon dioxide from a fissure in the earth; a fissure or fumarole from which such an exhalation is emitted.
