Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Modiola.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Modiola, genus name (independently formed in senses 1 and 2: see below) < classical Latin modiolus modiolus n. + -a -a suffix1 1.In sense 1, adopted as a genus name in Lamarck Système des animaux sans vertèbres (1801) 113, by alteration of earlier Modiolus (see modiolus n. 3). In sense 2, introduced by C. Moench Methodus Plantas (1794) 619, apparently with reference to the whorled arrangement of the carpels, resembling the hub of a wheel.
1. Zoology and Geology. A former genus of horse mussels (now called Modiolus); (also in form modiola) a horse mussel of this genus. Cf. modiolus n. 3. Now rare.
