Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: moderate v., -ive suffix.
Etymology: < moderate v. + -ive suffix. Compare post-classical Latin moderativus that controls or regulates (14th cent. in British sources), Italian moderativo (1363 in an isolated attestation in a translation from Latin), Middle French moderatif able to moderate (1505 in an isolated attestation).
