Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. monarchico-federalist Brit. /məˌnɑːkᵻkə(ʊ)ˈfɛd(ə)rəlɪst/, /məˌnɑːkᵻkə(ʊ)ˈfɛd(ə)rl̩ɪst/, U.S. /məˌnɑrkəkoʊˈfɛd(ə)rələst/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: monarchic adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < monarchic adj. + -o- connective.Found only in a small number of formations (see below). Compare later monarcho- comb. form. In quot. 1797 (also found in several contemporary U.S. newspapers) translating French monarchico-aristocratique in an anonymous translation of a letter from Thomas Jefferson to Philip Mazzei published in the Paris Moniteur (1797) 25 Jan.; the text of the original letter, as preserved in surviving copies, was:1797 T. Jefferson Let. 24 Apr. in Wks. (2002) XXIX. 82 An Anglican, monarchical, and aristocratical party has sprung up.
Now rare.
Forming words (esp. adjectives) in the sense ‘monarchical and ——’.
