Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Nepali. Or (ii) a borrowing from Kashmiri. Etymons: Nepali monāl; Kashmiri mōnāl.

Etymology: < Nepali monāl or Kashmiri mōnāl. The forms with a vowel other than o in the first syllable are perhaps influenced by Panjabi manāl. Compare Hindi munāl.

Also monal pheasant. Any of several heavily-built, typically crested Asian pheasants of the genus Lophophorus; esp. (more fully Himalayan monal) L. impejanus of the Himalayas (also called Impeyan pheasant).
