Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin monachus , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin monachus monk n.1 + -ism suffix, probably after Middle French, French monachisme (1554) or post-classical Latin monachismus (12th cent.; 1603 in a British source). Compare Byzantine Greek μοναχισμός (6th cent.).
