Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin monachalis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin monachalis (4th or 5th cent.; frequently in British sources from 11th to 15th centuries) < monachus monk n.1 + -alis -al suffix1. Compare Middle French monachal (a1528), French monacal (1611 in Cotgrave).
Now rare.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of a monk or of monastic life; monastic; monkish.
