The constellation that bears its name, lies between the S. pole of the world, and the S. pole of the ecliptic; and contains 30 small stars.

1899 R. H. Allen Star-names 291 (heading) Mons Mensae, the Table Mountain, now abbreviated by astronomers to Mensa.

1984 M. R. Chartrand Amateur Astron. Pocket Skyguide 164 [Mensa]..was originally named Mons Mensae, the ‘table mountain’, by Lacaille, referring to Table Mountain (often cloud-capped) above Cape Town, South Africa.
