Etymology: < classical Latin mōns mount n.1 Compare Middle French, French mont (16th cent. in specific use in sense 2, 1690 in sense 1: see mount n.1).With mons Jovis compare French mont Jovie (1611 in Cotgrave).
1. Palmistry. The rounded fleshy part on the palm at the base of a finger, or the ball of the thumb; = mount n.1 5. Obsolete.Chiefly in Latin compounds, as mons Jovis n. the base of the forefinger. mons Mercurii n. the base of the little finger. mons Saturni n. the base of the middle finger. mons Solis n. the base of the ring finger. Earliest in mons Veneris: see mons veneris n. 1.
