Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monoxylus ; Greek μονόξυλος ; -ic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin monoxylus or its etymon ancient Greek μονόξυλος (see monoxylous adj.) + -ic suffix, after monoxyle n., monoxylon n. Compare monoxylous adj.
Now rare.
Made out of a single trunk or piece of timber.Used of canoes and boats (cf. monoxylon n.) and of a style of coffin found in some prehistoric burials in the British Isles.
