Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -tropy comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -tropy comb. form. In sense 2 after German Monotropie (O. Lehmann Molekularphysik (1888) I. 119). In sense 3 after German monotrop, adjective (see monotropic adj.). With senses 2 and 3 compare earlier monotropic adj.
1. Biology. The property of exhibiting homogeneity in one direction only (see quot.); = monotropism n. 1. Obsolete. rare.

1895 J. A. Ryder in Biol. Lect. 1894 38 The completest homogeneity is found to occur in only one direction in parallel lines extending through the mass. This condition we may designate as monotropy.
2. Physical Chemistry. The existence of two polymorphs of a substance, one of which is stable and the other metastable over the whole range of their existence, so that conversion of the latter into the former can occur but not vice versa.
