Etymology: < scientific Latin Monotrocha, former group name (C. G. Ehrenberg Organisation, Systematik u. geogr. Verhältniss der Infusionsthierchen (1830) 64; < medieval Greek or Byzantine Greek μονότροχος : see monotroch n.) + -al suffix1. Compare earlier monotrochous adj., slightly later monotrochian adj., and also earlier polytrochal adj.
Zoology.
Of a trochophore larva: having a single band or ring of cilia round the body.
