Etymology: < monkey n. + nut n.¹In sense 2 monkey n. is perhaps used as an alteration of the name for the peanut in a West African language: similar-sounding forms are found in coastal languages from Senegal to Togo, e.g. Badyara mankoli, Balanta mangara, Diola é mangera, mankara, Crioulo (Guinea-Bissau) mancara, macara, Baga makan (plural), Temne makantr (plural).
