Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Tupi. Partly a borrowing from French. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Tupi mocó; French moco; Portuguese mocó.
Etymology: < Tupi mocó. In quot. 1831 via French moco (1829 in passage translated). In later use perhaps via Portuguese mocó (1873). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mōu·ko) /ˈməʊkəʊ/.
