Etymology: < mock adj. + man n.¹In quots. 1942 at sense 1, 1991 at sense 1 in sense 1 after Sanskrit kimpuruṣa , lit. ‘is it a man?’ < kim- interrogative particle + puruṣa man (see Purusha n.), probably referring in a Vedic text to a dummy (in later use also in senses ‘humanoid’ and ‘centaur’).
