a. Any of various shrubs of the genus Philadelphus (family Hydrangeaceae), resembling the sweet orange ( Citrus sinensis) in their white or cream-coloured, usually fragrant flowers; esp. P. coronarius (also called syringa), which is native to Europe and south-west Asia and is widely cultivated for its fragrant flowers.
