Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit mocarasa.
Etymology: < late Sanskrit mocarasa, of uncertain origin (compare Sanskrit moca name of various trees, including the banana (compare musa n.1), rasa juice, sap), with variation in the first vowel and elision of the final vowel(s) reflecting colloquial South Asian pronunciation. N.E.D. (1907) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (mōtʃrɒ·s) /moːtʃˈrʌs/.
Obsolete.
In South Asia: any of several types of gum resin obtained from tropical Asian trees; esp. that from the red silk-cotton tree, Bombax ceiba, used locally for medicinal purposes.
