Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Malay. Etymons: Latin babyroussa; Malay babi rusa.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin and scientific Latin babyroussa (1654; 1758 as specific name (as babyrussa: Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10) I. 50); 1811 as genus name ( G. Perry Arcana, or Museum of Nature)) and its etymon Malay babi rusa, literally ‘deer hog’ < babi hog + rusa deer (see rusa n.). Compare Dutch babiroessa, babiroesa (1726 in Valentijn), German Babirusa (1757 or earlier as babiroesa; also †babirusse (1773 or earlier, rare)), French babiroussa (1764 in Buffon), also †babirousse (1821 or earlier, rare).
Zoology.
A long-legged wild pig, Babyrousa babyrussa, endemic to Sulawesi and neighbouring islands, the male of which has upper canine teeth that grow upwards through the snout as horn-like curving tusks. Also called hog deer, pig deer.Recent research suggests that there are four distinct species of babirusa.
