Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French babiche.
Etymology: < Canadian French babiche (1669) < Micmac àpapìj (1612 as ababich', using French orthography; diminutive of àpapi rope, fishing line); perhaps with reinterpretation of French *l'ababiche as la babiche.In form babbage apparently influenced by -age suffix.
North American (originally and chiefly Canadian).
Strips of rawhide or sinew used as laces, thread, webbing, etc., esp. in snowshoes.
