Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Monogynia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Monogynia, order name ( Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (1735)) < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + γυνή (see -gynous comb. form) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1. Compare French monogynie (1783). Compare Digynia n., polygynia n., Octagynia n.
Botany. Now historical.
In the Linnaean artificial system: the first order in each of the first thirteen classes, comprising plants having flowers with only one pistil or stigma.

1757 Bradley's Gen. Treat. Agric. (new ed.) 231 (note) This excellent botanist [sc. Linnaeus] subdivides each of these general classes into orders, which he denominates monogynia, digynia, trigynia, &c. from the number of pistils or female parts of generation found in each plant.
