Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Monograptidae.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Monograptidae, family name (C. Lapworth 1873 in Geol. Mag. 10 502) < Monograptus , genus name (1865, apparently as alteration of the original irregular coinage Monograpsus (H. B. Geinitz Versteinerungen der Grauwackenformation (1852) I. 19)) < mono- mono- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek γραπτός marked with letters; in ancient Greek ‘painted’: see graptolite n.) + -idae (see -id suffix³).
