单词 monogeneous
释义

monogeneousadj.

Brit. /ˌmɒnə(ʊ)ˈdʒiːnɪəs/, U.S. /ˌmɑnəˈdʒiniəs/
Origin: Partly formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monogeneus , -ous suffix; mono- comb. form, heterogeneous adj., homogeneous adj.; Latin Monogenea.
Etymology: In sense 1 perhaps < scientific Latin monogeneus (see monogeny n.) + -ous suffix; compare French monogéné (1868 in Littré as a term in natural history). In sense 2 < mono- comb. form + -geneous (in e.g. heterogeneous adj., homogeneous adj.), after French monogène ( A. Cauchy Exercises d'anal. et de physique math. (1847) IV. 346; 1834 in sense ‘unique’; 1842 in botany in sense ‘having a single surface of growth’). In sense 3 probably independently < scientific Latin Monogenea (see monogenean adj. and n.) + -ous suffix. Compare monogenetic adj., monogenic adj.1, monogenous adj., and also monogenesis n., monogenist n., monogeny n.
