Etymology: < post-classical Latin monogastricus (R. Vieussens 1699, in Philos. Trans. Royal Soc. 21 373) < mono- mono- comb. form + gastricus gastric adj. With sense 1, compare earlier digastric adj. With sense 2, compare polygastric adj.
1. Anatomy. Of a muscle: having a single ‘belly’ or fleshy part; (originally) spec. †designating the tensor tympani (obsolete). Cf. digastric adj. rare.
