Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μονόγαμος , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μονόγαμος (see monogamous adj.) + -ist suffix. Compare earlier monogamize v., monogamy n. Compare also bigamist n., digamist n., polygamist n.
A. n.
1. A person who denies the validity of remarriage after the death of the first spouse. Also: a person who by custom or law is debarred from remarrying after the death of the first spouse. Opposed to digamist. Obsolete.
