单词 molrowing
释义

molrowingn.adj.

Brit. /ˈmɒlraʊɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈmɑlˌraʊɪŋ/
Forms: 1800s molrowing, 1800s– moll-rowing, 1800s– mollrowing, 1900s– moll rowing.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: moll n.2, row v.6, -ing suffix1.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < moll n.2 (compare sense 2 at that entry) + row v.6 + -ing suffix1, although association with cats in quots. 1860 at sense A. 1 and 1865 at sense B. and also in sense A. 2 would perhaps argue against identification of the first element as moll n.2 2; E. Partridge Dict. Slang (1937) suggests that the word is ‘perhaps a fusion of miauling and caterwauling ’. Compare molrower n.
slang. Now rare.
A. n.
1. The practice of socializing with a disreputable woman, spec. with the female partner of a gangster (see moll n.2 2); whoring.
