Etymology: < Russian molokan (1765, plural molokany ; later as molokanin , plural molokane ) < moloko milk n.1 (compare note below) + -an (or, respectively, later -anin), suffix forming nouns. The name was apparently first applied to members of the sect in 1765 by the Orthodox Church authorities in Tambov, because they drank milk on Orthodox fast days. They first referred to themselves as duxovnye xristiane spiritual Christians; within the movement, with its emphasis on the Bible as the sole authority, the name Molokan was later interpreted as an allusion to various New Testament references (e.g. Hebrews 5:12 and 1 Peter 2:2) to ‘spiritual milk’ or ‘the milk of the word’.
A member of a religious sect founded in south-eastern Russia in the early 18th cent., characterized by its acknowledgement of the truth of the Bible alone, its denial of the authority of the Orthodox Church, and its rejection of all forms of ritual and iconolatry.
