Origin: A borrowing from Manx. Etymon: Manx maor.
Etymology: < Manx maor, cognate with Scottish Gaelic and Irish maor (see mayor n. 1); compare mormaer n. Compare also Manx meoir mayor, bailiff and Welsh maer steward (13th cent., in Old Welsh as mair). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mōər) /mɔər/.
In the Isle of Man: a bailiff or government officer.

1900 A. W. Moore Hist. Isle of Man iv. i. 746 There is also a moar in each parish. This office is obligatory on the proprietors of land, and falls in rotation on each quarterland.
1997 Illustr. Encycl. Isle of Man 105/1 In Norse times the Moar may have represented the King in civil affairs; presided at the Sheading Court; maintained law and order and seen that taxes were collected.
