Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin mollicinus, molochinus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mollicinus (in mollicinum emplastrum soothing plaster ( Phillips's New World of Words, ed. 6, 1706)), variant (probably after classical Latin mollis soft, soothing) of molochinus (in molochinum emplastrum (1530 in a Latin translation of Galen); compare classical Latin molochina , noun, both neuter plural and feminine singular, denoting types of garment) < Hellenistic Greek μολόχινος made from mallow fibres (in μολόχινη ἔμπλαστρος (Galen)) < ancient Greek μολόχη , variant of μαλάχη mallow (compare malva n.) + -ινος -ine suffix2. Compare earlier mollificative adj., mollifying adj., mollitive adj., mollient adj., mollescent adj.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Of an ointment or application: that makes soft or supple.
