Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French monitrice.
Etymology: < French monitrice (in this specific sense attributed to Fernand Lamaze, 1890–1957), feminine form (see -trice suffix) corresponding to moniteur guide, instructor (c1455 in Middle French). Compare monitor n.
A woman who gives guidance and support during pregnancy and labour; an accoucheuse or midwife. Cf. doula n.
