单词 mnemonic
释义

mnemonicn.adj.

Brit. /nᵻˈmɒnɪk/, U.S. /nəˈmɑnɪk/
Forms: 1600s mnemonick, 1600s–1700s memonick, 1700s– mnemonic.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Perhaps also a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin mnemonica, mnemonicus, mnēmonicum; Greek μνημονικός.
Etymology: As noun in sense A. 1 < post-classical Latin mnemonica (1662 in the Latin parallel text in the source cited in quot. 1662 at sense A. 1; compare Greek μνημονική in the same text), use as noun of feminine of mnemonicus (1610 or earlier) < ancient Greek μνημονικός relating to memory < μνημον- , μνήμων mindful ( < μνᾶσθαι to remember (see note) + -μων , suffix forming adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix. As noun in sense A. 2 < classical Latin mnēmonicum mnemonic device < ancient Greek μνημονικόν mnemonic device, use as noun of neuter of μνημονικός . As adjective < post-classical Latin mnemonicus or ancient Greek μνημονικός; compare slightly earlier mnemonical adj. Compare German Mnemonik (noun, 1774), mnemonisch (adjective, 1774), French mnémonique (1800 as noun; 1834 as adjective), Italian mnemonica (noun, 1829), mnemonico (adjective, 1840), Portuguese mnemónica (adjective, 19th cent.), mnemónico (noun).Ancient Greek μνήμων ‘mindful’ represents an adjective corresponding to μνήμη memory (see mneme n.). The root of ancient Greek μνᾶσθαι ‘to remember’ represents a different ablaut grade of the Indo-European base seen in ancient Greek μέμονα I yearn, classical Latin meminī I remember (see i-mind n.). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nimǫ·nik) /niːˈmɒnɪk/. Documentary sources from the late 19th cent. onwards report wide variation in the pronunciation of the first syllable of this word (with either /mn-/ or /n-/ initially, and with the vowel realized as //, /ɪ/, /ə/, or /ɛ/).
