Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μνήμη , -on suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μνήμη memory (see mneme n.) + -on suffix1; apparently coined by A. Cherkin (see quot. 1966), whose forthcoming paper is discussed by Young (see quot. 19652).
Psychology.
The minimum physical change in a brain, or other system, which constitutes the storage of a single piece of information in the memory; a unit of memory.
