Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin monopteros.
Etymology: < classical Latin monopteros, adjective (Vitruvius) < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + πτερόν feather, wing, row or circle of columns (see ptero- comb. form). Compare earlier monopter n.In form monopteron probably either after ancient Greek πτερόν , or after an assumed use as noun of the neuter of the Latin adjective; compare dipteros n. and forms s.v.
Classical Architecture.
A temple consisting of a single circle of columns supporting a roof.
